  • Put a tax on vacant property to make it harder for speculators, whether foreign or domestic, to use real estate as a lucrative place to park cash.
  • Expand the tools available for municipalities, including density bonuses, to provide incentives for the development of affordable housing beyond the minimum requirement and remove requirements for municipalities to compensate developers.
  • Use a “housing first” approach to develop dedicated supportive housing for people with mental health and addictions issues, physical disabilities, or acquired brain injuries, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
  • Provide more funding for municipalities to renovate deteriorating social housing stock and introduce new social housing units in their communities to address unmet local need.
  • Increase support for proposed and existing social non-profit and co-operative housing, in partnership with municipalities and the Government of Canada.
  • Ensure that Indigenous people have access to adequate affordable housing by evaluating the Indigenous Supportive Housing Program (ISHP) and working closely with the Government of Canada and Indigenous housing providers.
  • Increase the number of secondary women’s shelters in Ontario, particularly in the north. The total number of beds in Ontario has decreased from 2014 to 2016.
  • Work with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation to expedite the announced portable housing benefit that will assist women fleeing violence to move to another province, and to find affordable housing in another province if needed.
  • Improve and expand Ontario’s home energy savings program to provide grants and other incentives for individuals and communities to improve the energy efficiency of buildings to help businesses, homeowners and renters make money by saving energy. This will include retrofits to improve insulation, and installing more energy efficient heating and cooling systems.
  • Incentivize municipalities to create bylaws for secondary suites, tiny homes and other infill and affordable housing options.
